(MS in CS for Scientists and Engineers)'도 별도로 운영 중입니다.

Q&A with Jessica Stern, Assistant Dean of Graduate Admission at USC Viterbi School of Engineering

1. What trends are you seeing among international applicants interested in AI and data science?

The biggest trend we're seeing is a strong emphasis on career outcomes. Students want to know how future-proof these programs are, whether they'll help them secure a job or advance in their careers, and what resources, support and industry connections Viterbi and USC provide to help them reach those goals.

Given the tech layoffs and the rapid evolution of AI, there's naturally a lot of uncertainty. At the same time, there's a lot of excitement about entering such a fast-growing field. Applicants want to understand how the program will prepare them, what kinds of jobs they'll be qualified for after graduation and whether opportunities like internships or networking can begin even before they finish the program. One thing students often do not take into account is that the job market they are looking at will be substantially different by the time they graduate.

We're also seeing more applicants with non-technical or non-engineering backgrounds who want to transition into data science or analytics. Fortunately, we do offer pathways for those students.

2. What key factors does USC Viterbi focus on when selecting applicants for AI/data master’s programs?

Academic achievement is the most important factor because these are technically rigorous programs. We first look for the academic foundation students need to succeed.

Most programs require applicants to have completed mathematics coursework, such as statistics, and some also require linear algebra, calculus or additional quantitative preparation, depending on the program. Familiarity with programming languages like Python is viewed positively and, for some programs, is strongly recommended. Computer science programs generally require applicants to have an undergraduate background in computer science.

Beyond academics, we review personal statements, résumés, internships, extracurricular involvement and other experiences that demonstrate passion for the field. We want to see that applicants' goals align with what they're hoping to accomplish through the program and that they've shown genuine commitment to pursuing this area of study.

3. Is there a pathway for non-STEM/non-major students to apply for the AI master’s programs?

Yes, depending on the specific interest. For AI, in addition to an MSCS specialization, we have AI-focused programs in Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering. For these, students need a strong math background. However, for Data Science, as I mentioned earlier, we have several interdisciplinary programs offered in partnership with other USC schools. Students don't necessarily need a background in data science, computer science or STEM to qualify if they have experience in the relevant domain. For example, applicants from communication, public policy or law can be competitive, provided they've completed two college-level math courses, which is generally sufficient preparation.

We also have programs that require a quantitative foundation but not necessarily a STEM degree. Our Applied Data Science program welcomes students from backgrounds such as social sciences, economics and finance. To be competitive, students should have completed two to three college-level math courses.

It's important to distinguish Applied Data Science from our Computer Science programs. For Computer Science, students generally need an undergraduate background in computer science, as those programs are much more technical. We also offer a special MS in Computer Science for scientists and engineers that incorporates foundational coursework into the program.

For students without that background who are interested in data science, Applied Data Science is typically the better fit because it's designed to be broadly applicable across many industries and disciplines.

4. What are the primary career paths for Korean alumni (e.g., U.S. employment, returning to Korea, pursuing a PhD)?

From what I've observed, many Korean alumni gain work experience after completing their degree and then return to Korea to work in industries such as technology, electronics or media, with many working at major conglomerates like Samsung, Naver, LG. Others remain in the United States, with alumni working at companies like NVIDIA, Amazon and even consulting firms like PwC. Some continue on to PhD degrees.

I also noticed that many graduate students, including Korean students, get work experience during their studies by working as course producers, graders or in other student employment positions. These roles are valuable because they not only provide employment but also allow students to build relationships with faculty, gain teaching experience and sometimes transition into research opportunities or lab positions.

5. How can students apply their program knowledge beyond the classroom (e.g. research, internships, partnerships)?

One of the biggest sources of support for our students is Viterbi Career Connections. In addition to USC's central Career Center, Viterbi has a dedicated career services office focused specifically on helping engineering students develop professionally from the moment they arrive on campus through graduation and into their careers.

Beyond large career and internship fairs, where more than 100 companies recruit Viterbi students, there are information sessions with employers, networking events with USC alumni working in targeted industries and countless opportunities for students to build professional relationships. The Trojan Network is incredibly valuable, and being in Los Angeles gives students direct access to recruiters seeking USC talent.

Career preparation begins almost immediately. During students' first weeks on campus, they participate in events designed to prepare them for conversations with recruiters. Programs like Viterbi Trek allow students to visit companies, make industry connections and gain firsthand exposure to different workplaces. Also, international students have access to USC Viterbi’s robust CPT and OPT programs.

For research, although our master’s programs are course-based, all students can participate in directed research (non-thesis research) and are not restricted to labs managed by the student’s home department.

6. What distinguishes USC Viterbi’s AI/data/analytics programs from similar programs at other universities?

One of the biggest differentiators is our interdisciplinary approach. Students can combine data science with fields like communications, law and public policy, allowing them to apply these skills in domain-specific ways.

Our research ecosystem is another major strength. Students have opportunities to engage with faculty and research centers that are advancing AI and related technologies, such as the Information Sciences Institute, whose pioneering contributions to Internet infrastructure continue today through leading research in AI, machine learning and cybersecurity.

Location also plays an important role. Being in Los Angeles gives students access to industries ranging from entertainment and aerospace to healthcare and biomedical engineering, creating opportunities to apply their skills across many sectors.

Another distinguishing feature is that some of our programs are accessible to students without traditional computer science or engineering backgrounds, making graduate study in AI and data science available to a much broader range of professionals.

7. What advice would you give to prospective students planning to apply for AI/data graduate programs at USC Viterbi?

If students are still completing their undergraduate degrees, I'd encourage them to choose coursework that supports the path they hope to pursue. Building a strong foundation in math, science and other STEM-related subjects is one of the best ways to prepare for these programs.

While many of our master's degrees are course-based rather than research-based, students interested in research should also consider whether a PhD may be a better fit. Many applicants assume they need to complete a master's degree first, but that's not always the case. Students with strong undergraduate research experience can apply directly to a PhD program and even apply to both a PhD and master’s program with one application fee.

I also encourage prospective students to explore faculty research, identify areas that align with their interests and begin thinking about the niche they'd like to pursue.

Finally, curiosity goes a long way. While online courses or MOOCs cannot replace university-level prerequisites, they do demonstrate initiative and a genuine interest in learning. Showing that you're willing to explore the field independently is always viewed positively and can help applicants better define the direction they want to take in graduate school.
