2023년 7월 12일, 미국 이민세관단속국 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)와 국토안보부 Department of Homeland Security (DHS)는 공식 STEM 프로그램 목록의 개정안[1]을 발표했는데 여기에 조경학 및 발달 청소년 심리학 등 8개의 새로운 전공이 추가되었습니다. 2022년 1월 바이든 행정부가 클라우드 컴퓨팅, 동물학, 기후 과학, 수리 경제학 등 22개 분야를 추가로 포함시킨 이후 다시 STEM OPT 자격을 확대하는 조치입니다.
STEM 프로그램 목록은 F-1 신분의 유학생이 졸업 후 취득한 학위가 DHS가 결정한 과학, 기술, 공학 또는 수학 (STEM) 학위에 해당하는지 여부를 결정하는 데 사용되며, 추가 24개월의 Optional Practical Training (OPT) 연장을 신청할 수 있게 해 줍니다. OPT는 유학생이 미국에서 머무르며 실무 경험을 쌓을 수 있는 기회이고, 잠재적으로 H-1B 신분과 취업 기반 영주권 기회로도 이어질 수 있습니다.
